Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal funding. At George Mason, University Policy 1202 defines our adherence to Title IX, which prohibits conduct such as sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and retaliation. Policy 1202 also prohibits other forms of sexual violence, such as sexual exploitation and complicity. George Mason University employees, who are not confidential employees, must report possible incidents of prohibited conduct (forms of sexual violence) to the Title IX Coordinator as soon as practicable.

Notice of Title IX Policy and Procedure Update
In April 2024, the federal government, under former President Joe Biden, released updates to the Title IX Regulation. However, on June 17, 2024, a federal judge stopped the implementation of this rule update in Virginia (as well as other states), and then on January 9, 2025, another federal judge stopped the implementation of the 2024 rule nationwide. As a result, the federal Title IX Regulation issued in 2020 under the first administration of President Donald Trump is the current regulation institutions are required to follow.
