What is the Americans with Disabilities Act? 

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. The ADA requires that employers provide reasonable accommodations to qualified employees, and in George Mason University’s case, students with disabilities. 

Role of the ADA Coordinator 

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator works within Compliance Services in George Mason’s Office of Access, Compliance, and Community to oversee accessibility and accommodation for employees and visitors with disabilities. 

The ADA Coordinator: 

  • Assists in determining reasonable accommodations for employees and visitors. 
  • Collaborates with George Mason offices, government agencies, and advocacy groups regarding accessibility issues. 
  • Consults with employees and supervisors to resolve disability-related workplace concerns. 
  • Reviews policies and procedures to ensure non-discriminatory practices. 
  • Provides technical assistance and direction for University policies with respect to the concerns of people with disabilities and in compliance with state and federal mandates. 
  • Is available to provide support and guidance to professional and instructional staff through consultation and training.

This notice is provided as required by Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA):
