Title IX at George Mason

Title IX and University Policy 1202 protect all members of the George Mason community, including students, faculty, staff, visitors, and contractors engaged in George Mason’s educational activities and programs at all of George Mason’s campuses, including Mason Korea. 

The Title IX Unit within the Office of Access, Compliance, and Community aims to provide expert support and consulting services to anyone in the campus community in relation to any form of sex-based discrimination and/or harassment. Using trauma-informed approaches, individuals that interact with the Title IX Unit can expect to be treated as a whole person with compassion, empathy, and clarity in all interactions with Title IX Unit staff.

What Does Title IX Cover? 

Title IX and University Policy 1202: Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct and Other Forms of Interpersonal Violence explicitly prohibit individuals from engaging in the following behaviors that constitute sexual harassment/sexual violence (collectively, these are called “Prohibited Conduct” in Policy 1202): 

  • Sexual Assault (rape, sodomy, sexual assault with an object, fondling, incest, statutory rape); 
  • Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment 
  • Hostile Environment Sexual Harassment 
  • Dating Violence 
  • Domestic Violence 
  • Stalking 
  • Sexual Exploitation 
  • Complicity 
  • Retaliation

Beyond prohibiting sexual harassment and forms of sexual violence, the scope of Title IX and Policy 1202 also includes: 

  • Pregnancy and Parenting (Students and Employees) 
  • Recruitment, Admissions, Scholarships, and Financial Aid 
  • Course offerings and access 
  • Hiring, retention, and promotion of employees 
  • Benefits and leave 
  • College Athletics, including NCAA sports 

When Should I Contact the Title IX Coordinator? 

Any student, faculty, staff member, applicant for admission or jobs, visitors, or contractors may contact the Title IX Coordinator with any questions or concerns related to sex or gender-based discrimination. Specifically, contact the Title IX Coordinator if you: 

  • Want to better understand your options if you believe you or someone you know may have experienced sex or gender-based discrimination, harassment, or sexual violence; 
  • Want to better understand George Mason’s Title IX Policy (Policy 1202); 
  • Wish to report possible incidents of sex or gender-based discrimination, harassment, or sexual violence;  
  • Need support related to pregnancy and related conditions and/or parenting; 
  • Need to report a possible violation of Policy 1204 (Prohibited Relationships with Students); or 
  • Otherwise need support from the University (in which case you may be referred to another office if your support need does not fall within OACC’s scope). 

We encourage you to reach out to the Office of Access, Compliance, and Community if you have any concerns about discriminatory behavior toward yourself or someone else.
